COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is for the beginning golfer. The objective is to acquaint the student with the “game of golf.” This will be accomplished by teaching the fundamentals of the golf swing and proper practice techniques. A particular emphasis will be placed on rules and etiquette. Also included will be instruction on the short game as well as proper equipment selection.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

1.  The student will develop feeling and understanding for the fundamentals of the golf swing        
2.  The student will learn proper practice procedures.
3.  The student will have a knowledge of rules, etiquette and terms needed to play a round of golf.
4.  Student will be able to play and evaluate a round of golf.

FACILITY

CSUF athletic field and Brea Golf Course Driving Range, 501 W. Fir, Brea 

EQUIPMENT

At Brea Golf Course Driving Range clubs will be provided.
Students will be required to purchase their own practice golf balls at the driving range. Cost will vary depending on the type of practice. 

ATTIRE

The golf course and driving range have a dress code which must be followed. Men, no sleeveless shirts, no jean shorts, no flip flop shoes, no tank tops, no sandals unless they are golf sandals.

INCLEMENT WEATHER 

We will meet at the Brea Golf Course clubhouse.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK BY THE STUDENT
 
Having been informed of the general risks associated with any physical activity, the specific risk associated with golf include the back, fingers, elbows and shoulders, as well as risks associated with hitting golf balls at a public driving range. The student assumes all potential risks and consequences described previously as well as any other risks which may occur during class time. Students should be aware that when classes meet and are dismissed at the driving range, the University is not responsible for their risks to and from the meeting area.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON INSURANCE

The University does not have or provide non-travel accident insurance for students. Matriculated CSUF students are entitled to use services available at the campus Student Health Center during its normal hours of operation. Students are advised to carry an adequate health insurance policy of their own. Reasonably priced limited coverage insurance is available through the Associated Students.

SPECIAL ACCOMADATIONS

Students requiring special accommodations must contact Disabled Student Services in UH 101.  Students with proper documentation should make this need known to the instructor during the first week of classes and every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate the student’s needs.

GRADING AND EVALUATION

1.  Test#1 Midterm – 20 multiple choice questions 
      on etiquette, rules and golf swing.			        20 points   
2.  Test #2 Final – 30 multiple choice questions 
      on etiquette, rules and golf swing.			        30 points
3.  Skill test – practical exam on ability to perform
     practice drills.  						        60 points
4.   Etiquette test – practical exam on knowledge of
      etiquette needed for a round of golf.		        40 points
5.  Round of golf – written evaluation on a 9 hole
      round of golf.						        30 points
6.  Tournament critique – written critique on a
      golf tournament.					        20 points

ATTENDANCE

Attendance and participation are a minimum requirement for completing a performance course and are therefore taken into consideration when determining final grades. Each student will be allowed to miss the equivalent of one weeks work of class without penalty. Each absence thereafter will result in the student’s final grade being lowered by one half grade. Furthermore, students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of class sessions in order to receive a passing grade in the course. A performance course meeting two times each week will require that the student attend a minimum of 21 classes to pass the class. Failure to do so will result in an automatic F in the course.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

A student who employs dishonest tactics shall be subject to action ranging from reprimand to a grade of F. Please refer to the current catalog form more particular information.

The objective is to further the student’s ability and knowledge of the “game of golf.” This will be accomplished by teaching the fundamentals of the golf swing and proper practice techniques. A particular emphasis will be placed on rules and etiquette. Also included will instruction on the short game, club selection and golf course strategy.

3.  The student will gain knowledge of rules, etiquette and terms needed to play a round of golf.
4.  Student will be able to play and analyze a round of golf based on class instruction
